POM Wonderful Pomegranate Juice Review and Giveaway!

by Lee on February 6, 2010

You may have seen Pom Wonderful Pomegranate Juice in the refrigerated section of your local grocery store. It seems a bit pricey and you may wonder what makes it so special. When the nice people at POM wrote me and asked if I’d be willing to accept some free bottles of their 100% Pomegranate Juice in return for a review I was eager to try it out.

POM Wonderful 100% pomegranate juice is filled with the good stuff. The good stuff being ingredients that help keep you healthy. POM contains no added sugars, colors or preservatives which is refreshing in this processed food world we live in. It also contains high levels of antioxidants and is a great source of potassium. The fact that it is gluten free allows more people to experience the health benefits POM has to offer.

No you may be wondering, “Alright, so it is healthy, does this mean it tastes awful?” The answer would be no. It may beĀ  bit of an acquired taste, but it is good. It’s kind of tart but sweet at the same time. My mom and I both really enjoy it. And it makes me feel good to know that it is probably the healthiest thing I’ve had all day…or all week. You can also cook with it. The POM Wonderful website has a recipe section which has a nice array of late night “mommy drinks”.

Right now the nice people at POM Wonderful are offering a free bottle to one of my lucky readers. To enter follow the directions below.

POM presents a bit of pucker that packs a weighty nutritional punch! It is crimson gold in a funky shaped bottle. The POM Red Devil? Now that’s what I’m talking about! Check it out here: http://bit.ly/aWnxCm

Butternut Squash, Sweet Potato and Pomegranate Soup

* Juice from 2-3 POM Wonderful Pomegranates* or 1 cup POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice
* 1/2 cup arils from 1 large POM Wonderful Pomegranate
* 1 1/2 lbs. butternut squash, peeled, seeded and cubed
* 1 sweet potato, peeled and cubed
* 1/3 cup onion, chopped
* 2 tablespoons green chiles, chopped
* 3 cups chicken broth (or water)
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 2 teaspoons white pepper
* 1/2 cup dry sherry or other white wine
* 1 cup milk (nonfat or low fat)
* 1 cup crispy corn tortilla chips (1 ounce)
* 1/2 cup toasted pumpkin seeds (pepitas) or sunflower seeds
* 1/2 cup creme fraiche or sour cream

Preparation

* Prepare fresh pomegranate juice.*
* Score 1 fresh pomegranate and place in a bowl of water. Break open the pomegranate underwater to free the arils (seed sacs). The arils will sink to the bottom of the bowl and the membrane will float to the top. Sieve and put the arils in a separate bowl. Reserve 1/2 cup of the arils from fruit and set aside. (Refrigerate or freeze remaining arils for another use.).
* In a stockpot, add butternut squash, sweet potato, onion, green chiles, chicken broth and pomegranate juice. Broil to a boil.
* Lower heat to a medium low and cook for 30 minutes or until squash can be easily smashed against the side of the pot with a spoon
* Add salt, pepper and sherry or white wine.
* Remove from the heat and cool slightly. Process soup in a food processor until smooth.
* Return soup to the stockpot, add 1 cup of milk (or more if mixture is too thick) and reheat.
* Serve in bowls with crisp corn chips, creme fraiche, pomegranate arils and toasted pumpkin seeds.
