Please Submit Your Questions For Nancy Kanter Senior VP of PlayHouse Disney Programming!

by Lee on March 5, 2010 · 17 comments

I have the opportunity to interview Nancy Kanter, Senior Vice President of Playhouse Disney Worldwide. One of the divisions that Nancy oversees is Playhouse Disney Programming. I wanted to offer you the chance to submit any questions you may have for her regarding the shows our children are watching. Maybe you wonder what happened to your favorite show or you are wondering what it takes to be picked up by a power house like Playhouse Disney. Whatever your question please feel free to submit it below.

A little about Kanter’s role with Playhouse Disney Programming:

Kanter oversees the development and production of all long and short-form live action and animated series. She is responsible for the creative vision of Playhouse Disney, unifying all programming, marketing and brand management teams and ensuring cohesiveness between programming, promotion and all extensions of the brand.

Kanter supervises the development of Playhouse Disney’s most successful original series to date, including the top-rated “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse,” “Handy Manny,” “Imagination Movers,” “My Friends Tigger & Pooh,” “Little Einsteins” and “Higglytown Heroes,” as well as the newly launched hit “Jungle Junction,” and upcoming series, “Jake and the Never Land Pirates.”  Kanter was also instrumental in acquiring the hit series “The Wiggles,” “The Doodlebops” and “Charlie and Lola.”

This is sure to be an informative interview and I hope you will all watch. It will be aired during my web show on Thursday March 18th at 10PM EST.

“Little Einsteins” are one my children’s favorite shows. I am curious as to why the move to a later time? Why not have it on earlier in place of one of the 2 Handy Manny or 2 Mickey Mouse Clubhouse episodes. I consider “Little Einsteins” to be one of the better shows on Playhouse Disney, encouraging a love for classical music, singing, dancing and learning about musical instruments and musical properties and the arts. Giving children an early start to music and arts will only enhance their learning and foster creativity in a way that no other show provides. I do wish this show was on at an earlier time and are there any plans in the works to add more shows to the line up that include the arts and learning of the arts?

I agree with the above thoughts re: “Little Einsteins.” Are there any plans in the works to launch a Playhouse Disney Channel? We only have 1 all day pre-school network available to us. Sometimes we turn it on in the late afternoon, but we don’t always care for their shows. We love all the Playhouse Disney shows.

Are there any ideas for new shows in the works? My daughter LOVES PBS kids shows like Super Reader and Word World – are there any shows that teach letter recognition and early reading on Playhouse Disney?

We are a house that only watches PHD, I don’t like the shows on Nick and PBS, and since I am the one having to watch them too…Well I like to watch what’s on. That said, I’d love to see some of the old cartoons from Disney. My oldest son, 5, loved watching House of Mouse because of the shorts. Any way of re-vamping that show and bringing some of the old cartoons back so a new generation can experience them? He loves the black and whites, from the Steamboat Willy era.

Also any way of bringing a new show that is in classic animation style (like Phineas & Ferb) versus the computer animated style like Handy Manny?

I’ll 2nd a full time PHD channel! That would be great! Thanks, keep up the great work!

I am with Melissa on this one. I would absolutely love to see the older cartoons from Disney back. I don’t really like the “new” look of cartoons, and would love to see more of the older ones! Plus, my kids adore the older ones too!

We too are huge Playhouse Disney Fans in our house – it is all we watch. I would actually like to ask about the shorts in between the shoes. My daughter really likes Za Frank, but there only seem to be a couple of episodes… Do you only make a set few of the shorts or are they on going like the serieses?

Thanks!

Jen

PS – PLAYHOUSE Disney at Hollywood stuidos is wonderful too!

First, kudos for the new short program – Dance A Lot Robot. My son LOVES it and we DVR it for little dance parties throughout the day.

We also miss Little Einsteins in the morning.

How do they balance entertainment and teaching skills in little ones? Because while TV is obviously no substitute for parenting and preschool learning and interaction, it does have the ability to teach kids a thing or two. How can parents help toddlers make the connection between something they’ve seen on TV and turn it into a teaching moment or lesson?

When will there be Chuggington DVDs? My 3yo just can’t get enough, and Mondays when it’s not on can be rough for a child who thrives on routine.

Are there any plans to incorporate the Muppets into Playhouse Disney programming now that Disney owns them? The Muppets were my favorites when I was a kid and I would love to introduce my daughter to them. Speaking of puppets, what happened to Johnny and the Sprites? We miss them! Would also love to see Bear in the Big Blue House return.

Would love to see a full-time PHD channel. I am not a fan of Nick Jr., and when Disney moves to the older kids’ shows later in the day, that’s sometimes all that’s available to us.

Why oh why are the times of Playhouse shows cut each year? We used to watch from 6 am through to 12! Each year I find myself searching for a new 6 year old appropriate channel to
replace the times when you start showing the tweens shows in the morning! We miss the morinings spent with Playhouse and suggest you reconsider bringing back some of the old
shows and the original times. Start a sister channel to show only tween shows and leave this
one for the younger kids!

As someone said earlier, when my 6 year old was little, PHD lasted until 12 noon. It makes no sense that it only lasts until 9am EST now. My daughter usually wakes up at 8am. Showing tween shows for the rest of the day makes no sense…they’re in school! Seriously…cater to the people who are actually at home watching the tv!
