When Lee asked me if I had any interest in reviewing Sony Music’s new CD of the new Broadway Hit Musical Comedy “Promises, Promises” starring Sean Hayes of Will and Grace Fame and Broadways own Kristin Chenoweth from Wicked (who also happens to be my own personal hero) I jumped at the chance. I am a huge fan of the Broadway Musical, just ask my teenage son who is always rolling his eyes at me and telling me to turn down the volume on my Ipod because no one in the neighborhood appreciates my rendition of “Popular” as much as I do.
The music of Promises, Promises follows the story of Neil Simon’s Book based on the screen play “The Apartment” by Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond. The original score is by two of the best music men in the business today, Mr. Burt Bacharach and lyrics by Hal David. It certainly lives up to expectations. The soundtrack is amazing and the writing superb. Plus the voices of Sean Hayes and Kristen Chenoweth jump out and grab your attention.
There are a few oldies that I remember from my childhood like “Say a Little Prayer” and “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again” which are sweet songs of musical innocence from back in the day. Then there are some new favorites like “Turkey Lurkey Time” sung by the cast which is a big musical number with lots of toe tapping fun. I’m sure to embarrass my son to tears vacuuming the house singing along to that one! There are also plenty of fun vibrant songs like Sean Hayes singing “Upstairs” and the more seriously heartfelt songs like Kristen Chenoweth singing “Knowing When to Leave”. This CD has captured the plays dazzle and is a sure to be a hit in the Broadway classics hall of fame.

I love A House is Not A Home.
My favorite song of the score is “Whoever You Are, I Love You”–years ago I saw an ED SULLIVAN SHOW rerun and Pearl Bailey did a marvelous version of it (the program was from the time of the original run of the musical).

“I’ll Never Fall In Love Again” is my choice!
I really love the song “Half As Big As Life” — it’s such an energetic, affirming song, which builds to a big finish, and I love the way Sean Hayes delivers it on the cast recording. I’ve been really eager to get this CD since I saw the cast perform on the Tony Awards this year, so thanks for the chance to enter!
