Jackie’s Posts

Remember being a kid in elementary school and preparing for the class Valentine’s Day party? Who didn’t love sitting at the glitter table with the glue and construction paper decorating their shoe box? I would use as many heart shaped paper doilies as could fit and I swear I still find glitter from those projects to this day. We would put our boxes on display and then on Valentine’s Day everyone would bring in a little card to put in each of their fellow students box. Then gorge ourselves on Hershey’s Kisses and chocolate milk.

That night you would rush home to open your box and read all the notes hoping that one blonde boy who is always kicking your chair during reading class finally confessed his love to you. The best Valentine’s had candy included. You could always tell the kids who had stay-at-home moms; they had the homemade cards with Hershey’s candies glued to them. Today Hershey’s has expanded their line of Valentine’s Day Candy to include Jolly Ranchers Heart Shaped Suckers, Reese’s Peanut Butter Hearts and Peppermint Patties (which are my all time favorite) in pretty heart shaped containers.

Every year since Jake was little I have taken his favorite candy, Milk Chocolate Hersey’s Kisses, put them in a big red container and set them out by his breakfast on Valentine’s Day. This way he would be reminded every day for a week that I love him, that was if he could last a week without eating them all. Apparently I was on to something, because now Hersey’s Kisses come in specialized packaging made especially for Valentine’s Day. You can get milk chocolate kisses or a combination of kisses and hugs in a traditional heart shaped box or you can go with a personalized touch with a new picture box that has a window on top of it for you to insert your favorite photo. There are many ways to let Hershey’s Kisses help you tell the special people in your life how much you love them.

Hershey’s has these and many other crafty ideas for celebrating Valentine’s Day this year. For some great ideas, visit www.Hershey.com/celebrate/valentinesday and you too can wow your kids classmates with the special treat this year.

You can check them out on Facebook and Twitter. Always remember that nothing says I Love You like a Hershey’s Kiss! XOXO

Every year I dread the words, “What would you like for Christmas?”.

I never know what I want; I’m too busy taking care of everyone else to take the time to figure out my own needs.

Household items are always a good gift for me. I am a freak when it comes to keeping my house clean. I don’t like clutter and I hate mess. Although I’ve never been diagnosed with OCD, I am walking a thin line, so I take my cleaning tools very seriously.

Lee is not as savvy about these things as I am, so when I told her that I wanted a stick vacuum for Christmas she probably rolled her eyes and then told me to give her complete details about the one I wanted, otherwise she would not make that choice for me.

Whenever I am in the market for a new appliance, I always start with Electrolux, they never fail me. I did my research and found that the Electrolux Ergorapido Vacuum was best suited for my needs. I have a very large dog that sheds so badly that if I didn’t love him with all my heart I would make him live on the roof of my house. I’ve never seen an animal shed so much hair! So you can imagine how important it is that I have a vacuum that can really pick that up. I’ve tried other stick vacuums in the past and have always resorted to having to get out my big cyclone heavy duty vacuum and drag it around using the attachment to pick up the hair on the tile floors in my home. You don’t notice the hair on the carpet as badly as you do when it is accumulating in the corners of your kitchen. I have to vacuum at least every other day, so dragging the big one out was beginning to be a pain. Not anymore. Although the color is horrible, a rusted orange that matches nothing in my home, the vacuum is probably one of the best I’ve ever had.

First of all its cordless and that is awesome. You pick it up and use it, nothing to plug in or roll up when you’re done. The Ergorapido sits on a cradle that serves as a constant charger, so my battery is never dead. Next, it has bag less cyclone technology, all I have to do is open the canister and dump it in the trash. They also built in the little door in the front that if you are using the Ergorapido alongside the regular vacuum, you can simply pop open the door and use the hose from the big vacuum to suck all the dirt out. Not that you really do that very often, but it’s a nice option. The head has a spinning bar so it leaves nothing behind and will pick up just about anything from your hard tile or wood floor surface. Best part, the Ergorapido has a removable center that works as a dust buster. I love that because when I take Buddy out in the car, I always have to vacuum the hair out of my back seat. The Ergorapido is perfect.

If you are like me and love a clean home with little effort, the Electrolux Ergorapido is the perfect stick vacuum for you. Easy, powerful, cordless and always ready to tackle your toughest house cleaning jobs, the Ergorapido is by far my favorite gift this Christmas. You can learn more about the Electrolux Ergorapido by visiting http://www.electrolux.com

Winter in the Midwest can be brutal on the psyche. The doom and gloom of grey everywhere you look, only seeing the sun once a week, if you’re lucky; it puts you in a constant state of what I refer to as the “Doldrums”. One of my all time favorite books “The Phantom Tollbooth” by Norton Juster, describes The Doldrums as a colorless place where thinking and laughing are not allowed. Yup, that pretty much sums up Chicago in January.

So what do you do to keep your spirits up during the long stretch of winter? Well, it helps to be as upbeat as possible. Get out of the house and go be with other people, even if it’s just the local retail store. Crack a joke out loud in the aisle at the department store, “Whow, this towel cost $60.00! Does the Queen shop here? Are these Royal towels? Where’s the poor man’s towel section?” You won’t even believe how fast everyone around you comes to life.

Have a party! Who needs an excuse? Make one up! “You’re cordially invited to my dog Buddy’s 72nd Birthday Party” Nothing is more entertaining than those crazy people who throw lavish parties for their pets. There is nothing more fun than getting together with your friends to have a drink and some finger food. It doesn’t have to be expensive or over the top. You would be surprised how many people are just looking for an excuse to get out of the house in February. Ask your friends to bring something, they will do it and not mind at all. I have an Oscar Party every year. My girlfriends come spend the evening sipping Champagne punch and exchanging snarky comments about the “beautiful people”. It’s a blast and it’s good for the soul to bond with your Ya Ya Sisterhood!

Get up and move. Every gym from New York to Los Angeles has a special during the month of January. Join up and get that blood flowing. Personally, I hate exercising, but I love exercise. Meaning that  the act of movement has never appealed to me, but once I’m up and going I feel great for hours, so it makes getting off the couch worth it in so many ways. Just because it’s snowing outside doesn’t mean you have to been on lock down for the next 3 months. Forgo the shoveling and grab your sled. Where is the rule written that you must be under 15 to enjoy sledding down a steep hill? Don’t worry, there will be plenty of 10 year old kids to help you get up once you’ve reached the bottom, and you’ll be forever known as the coolest mom on the block.

Take on a new hobby. I love to cook so I find it exhilarating to experiment on a Sunday afternoon in winter. It’s the perfect time of the year to turn on the oven, so take advantage of that and roast some winter root veggies, they are yummy and good for you. Try your hand at making soup or baking bread. If the kitchen is not your thing, take up sewing. Learn how to make that quilt you saw at the fair last summer that you almost sold your youngest child to have. Paint a self portrait, don’t worry, no one will judge, have you ever seen a Picaso? Yikes! Knit your kids some scarves that they will refuse to wear. It will be a Thanksgiving conversational piece for the rest of their lives. Try something new, no matter what it is. The cold winter nights will feel less harsh I promise you.

My point is that happiness is a state of mind. Winters are long and tough to get through, but you don’t have to fall into that dark place where you feel bogged down and blue. Try to make this winter a happy one and smile, it increases your face value.

PepBoys Fails Customer Service!

by Lee on January 11, 2012

PepBoys Does Everything For Less Because They’ll Rip You Off!

UPDATE: Hope, the Regional Manager mentioned previously in this story recently called to say that although they are not admitting to any wrong doing (actually breaking the car) and they do believe it was not PepBoys who broke it, they are going to fix it because they should have caught it earlier in the month when they changed the brake pads. This is wonderful news of course but I do want to point out the power of social media. I firmly believe if it had not been for our ability to reach hundreds of thousands of people our issue would probably not have been resolved. I hope companies will take note of this situation and remember how important customer service really is.

Being a modern woman today means that you can do anything. I am a strong, confident, independent woman with a good job that I work hard at. So why is it the only thing that makes me cringe with fear is hearing the words “mom, something is wrong with the car?” My nightmare began with the words, “Mom, my brakes aren’t working” but the terror really began with a trip to my local Pep Boys Service Station.

The first sign of brake trouble

My 1999 Mercury Mystique was the perfect hand me down car for my teenage son. In January 2010 I attempted to do as much preventative maintenance on it as I could before handing over the keys to my son. In November 2010 Jake was on his way to work when he called to say his brake pedal was going all the way to the floor and he pulled over afraid to drive it. We took the car to our local shop. The rear brake line snapped from old age. It cost less than $150.00 to fix. Then Jake complained in January 2012 of shaking when he applied his brake.  I assumed it must need new brake pads. Figuring this was not going to be a big deal, I decided we would take it to Pep Boys where they do break jobs in their sleep.

My experience with Pep Boys

We checked the car in around 9:00 AM, January 2, 2012. Explained the brake history, explained the problem we where experiencing at the time and how we had the brake line on the rear of the car fixed just 2 months prior. Mike, the service manager, gave me the rundown of exactly what is included in a full brake inspection at Pep Boys, this included the following (taken directly from the Pep Boys paperwork I was given and also viewed on their web site):

“Our brake system evaluation examines your entire braking system to accurately determine exactly what problem you may have and what it will take to get you back on the road safely.” Includes

Removal of all 4 wheels

Inspection of all hydraulics, fluid, and hardware. Degree of friction is also noted.

Provide recap of evaluation with recommended solution. Free with system repair

Mike explained at noon that they completed a full evaluation of my brake system and my front pads and rotors needed to be replaced because of damage caused by rust and wear. He also explained that the vibrating or thumping could be caused by the calipers and pistons and that they may have to remove and replace those as well. He would know more once they removed them from the car and inspected them. The cost for all of this would be $679.00. I approved the work.

J.Jill Clothing Review!

December 14, 2011

I am a plus sized girl; it’s hard to shop for good, quality clothing when you’re not shaped like Anne Hathaway. Real women don’t weigh 12 pounds. We have hips and breasts and those of us who are moms even have, dare I say it, a belly that does not go away no matter how [...]
